Mortal (2020)

MORTAL Official Trailer (2020) Nat Wolff Fantasy Movie HD

A Norwegian film with most of the dialogue in English (along with English subtitles), Mortal is a fantasy action movie inspired by Norse mythology with sci-fi elements integrated into the plot. Eric (Nat Wolff) wakes up in the wilderness to discover that he not only has terrible burns but that virtually everyone he touches dies. He meets with a psychologist named Christine (Iben Akerlie), who tries to help after discovering his powers are controlled by his emotions.

Mortal was well received by viewers and earned mixed reviews from critics. Jared Mobarek of The Film Stage calls the movie a “fascinating take … with some cool set pieces and a willingness to increase stakes by killing characters and dealing with the complexity of the aftermath.”

Sirona (Ashlynn Hideman) is a young woman with supernatural gifts. She escapes from a government facility where she is being held captive and people are conducting experiments on her. But her freedom is short-lived because soon, she finds herself on the run from mercenaries who are desperate to capture her and take her back.

Earning a 90% Rotten Tomatoes audience score, Sirona is one of those lesser-known indie films for fans who revel in finding underground gems. But views are polarizing, and Sirona will only appeal to those who appreciate low-budget sci-fi and all of its charms.

The Wall (2012)

The Wall Official Trailer 1 (2013) - Drama HD

Based on the Marlen Haushofer novel Die Wand, The Wall is an Austrian-German sci-fi drama about Die Frau (Martina Gedeck), who travels to a remote hunting lodge with friends only to realize that after they go out for a walk, she is trapped behind an invisible wall. She spends three years alone with the help of her friend’s dog, struggling with isolation, depression, and confusion as to what is going on.

Earning decent reviews, The Wall is a heavy, haunting movie that’s not your traditional sci-fi. Boston Globe’s Ethan Gilsdorf describes The Wall as “bleak and beautiful, harrowing yet inspiring … a stunning tale of isolation and survival in a wild and silent world.”

Stop! And watch these 3 great movies leaving Netflix by April 1
Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny in Space Jam.

It's that time of the month. Netflix users must familiarize themselves with the list of titles departing by April 1. Due to licensing agreements, it's unknown when these movies will return. For example, Interstellar is one of the movies leaving in a few days. It should live on Paramount+, but who knows when it will come back to Netflix.
The uncertainty should make Netflix users want to stream as many departing movies as they can between now and April 1. For starters, try one of the three movies below: a black comedy, an iconic live-action animated basketball game, and a 1980s coming-of-age staple.

We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

3 underrated movies you need to watch in April 2025
Two guys and two girls hug and lean against a wall.

March was not a banner moment for the box office. While Mickey 17 received critical acclaim, Bong Joon Ho's sci-fi comedy will likely lose close to $75 million. While Novocaine and Black Bag were solid B-movies, they also failed to attract theatrical audiences. Disney will likely play the role of savior, as Snow White should bring families back to the theaters.
April doesn't have too many big-budget blockbusters. Ryan Coogler's Sinners is probably the biggest attraction, with Alex Garland's Warfare as a close second. There will be even more theatrical offerings this month, including a sci-fi anthology, a buddy comedy, and a crime thriller.

Freaky Tales (April 4 in theaters)
Freaky Tales (2025) Official Trailer - Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani
As soon as the 1980s-inspired synths began in the trailer for Freaky Tales, I knew I would like this movie. Then, Pedro Pascal lit an envelope and said, "F--- you," to the gentleman sitting across from him, and I couldn't be more in awe. I have tried. In Freaky Tales, the filmmaking duo of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck return with their first movie since 2019's Captain Marvel.
Boden and Fleck craft an analogy movie set in 1987 Oakland and featuring an extensive group of characters: an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector. The movie is split into four chapters of interconnected stories that revolve around underdogs. It's been over a year since Freaky Tales premiered at Sundance, so hopefully, this action comedy will be worth the wait.
Sacramento (April 11 in theaters)
Sacramento | Official Trailer (HD) | Vertical
Sacramento is not young enough to be coming-of-age and not old enough to be mid-life crisis. Perhaps it's somewhere in the middle. Either way, it's a buddy comedy with talented and likable actors, including Michael Cera, Micael Angarano (writer and director), Maya Erskine, and Kristen Stewart. One day, Glenn (Cera) gets in the car with his estranged friend, Rickey (Angarano), and heads to lunch.
Yet Rickey decides to keep driving in favor of a drive to Sacramento. Rickey's father recently died, and he wants some company to spread the ashes. With permission from his pregnant wife (Stewart), Glenn accompanies Rickey on a California road trip. Somewhere along the way, Rickey tries to win over Tallie (Maya Erskine). Sacramento feels like a heartfelt comedy tailor-made for 30-somethings with anxiety. In other words, your new favorite movie.
